The digester is a widely used instrument in laboratories performing analysis for diversified applications in food&feed, beverage (nitrogen, protein, Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen), environmental (COD, Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen), chemical and pharmaceutical (organic nitrogen) industries, according to a variety of Standards (such as AOAC, ISO, EPA, DIN etc.).
Sample preparation is a crucial part of the analysis and making errors means not obtaining reliable results. With DKL Series manual operations have been reduced: the lowering and the raising of the sample is completely automatic, as the separation between test tubes and suction cap. The operator only has to weigh the sample, introduce it into a test tube, add reagents and catalyst tablets and select the program.

The Dumas method is used for the quantitative determination of nitrogen in different substances based on a method of over a century and a half ago. Known also as “Combustion method”, it ensures precise results in few minutes, breaking down the sample into its elemental compounds. Substances produced, such as H2O, O2 and CO2, are trapped, in order to ensure the correct detection of the nitrogen.
It’s an alternative to Kjeldahl method for the determination of nitrogen and protein content in different types of sample.
Dumas method is the faster official one, validated by different International Organizations, such as AOAC, AACC, ASBC, ISO, IFFO, OIV, etc.
Rapid Soxhlet Extraction
Solvent extraction is used to determine the quantity of various components contained in agricultural, industrial or environmental samples. Soxhlet extraction is one of the most widely used analytical techniques. Adaptations of the technique have been introduced over time in order to reduce lengthy extraction times, for example by increasing the temperature of the solvent used.
The modifications introduced by the American chemist Edward L. Randall are some of the most effective for this purpose. VELP Scientifica solvent extractors operate according to the Randall technique.

The authorities of almost all countries require manufacturers of packaged foods and animal feeds to declare the fiber content on the packaging as part of the nutritional table.
Dietry Fibre Digestion and Extraction
The dietary fiber determination is carried out on foods intended for human nourishment.
AOAC (Official Methods of Analysis) proposes enzymatic method 985.29 for determining dietary fiber by way of digestion with thermostable enzymes in foods and animal feeds.
